形态描述：多年生水生或沼生矮小草本。块茎较小；根状茎细弱，横走。茎斜卧水中，稀直立，长1.5-20厘米，细弱。叶片扁平，长20-25厘米，宽约4毫米，先端渐尖，基部鞘状，边缘膜质，浮水或挺水。花序穗状，稀总状，长2-3.5厘米；雄性头状花序通常1(-2)个，靠近雌性头状花序，但不相接；雌性头状花序2个，稀3个，下部1个雌性头状花序具总花梗或否；雄花花被片长约1.5毫米，膜质，先端不整齐，或浅裂，花药长0.8-1毫米，矩圆形，花丝长约2毫米，丝状；雌花被片长约2毫米，先端浅裂至深裂，近匙形，膜质，柱头长0.8-1毫米，单侧，花柱短粗，或多少细长，子房长1-1.5毫米，披针形，具短柄，或无。果实宽披针形，褐色，无棱，向上渐尖，基部具短柄，花被片宿存于果柄基部。花果期7-9月。2n=30。
